Things to
do in Palolem
There are
lots of things to do in Palolem. While visiting this beautiful beach in South
Goa, India, you can do as little or as much as you like. The beach is just as
welcoming for ‘beach bums’ as it is for people who want to really experience
the local culture and do some exploring while they are there.
So first
the beach bums: you are going to love Palolem beach. The whole area is blessed
with great energy and a relaxed atmosphere and lazing on the beach here is just
fabulous.
First of
all the beach is really picturesque and secondly, all the resorts along the
beach tend to have sun beds out which you can use free of charge as long as you
buy a drink or something from their bar. You can grab a sun bed and umbrella
and while the hours away watching the world go by and the tide come in and out.
A lot of the resorts serve great snacks and food and gorgeous fresh juices to
keep you well hydrated while you soak up the sun. The other great thing about
Palolem beach is that it is in India, which makes it a quite entertaining beach
to relax on. You will see the odd cow wandering by and there are ‘beach
hawkers’ who will come and offer you their wares. They can be quite annoying
but if you tell them you are not interested in buying their sarongs or
bracelets or whatever it is they are selling they will usually leave you alone.
If you find you get bored of lying on the beach you will not have far to go to
enjoy a fishing trip or a dolphin watching trip on one of the local boats. This
kind of trip is on offer all the way along the beach; friendly local fishermen
can take you out along the bay to do a spot of fishing or to see if you get
lucky and see some dolphins. Both are great experiences. There is also a great
boat trip up the river at the end of the north side of Palolem beach. If you
feel like you need a spot of exercise, wander along the beach. You may see the
fishermen bringing in their daily catch, and if you walk all the way to the end
of the beach you can wander onto Monkey Island or watch the spectacular sunsets
on the rocks.
For those
who like a busier type of holiday, Palolem main road is the place to start. The
road is lined with shops and stalls, and there are lots of great authentic
Indian gifts on offer. There are also several travel agents on the main road
which offer day excursions and activities. You can book a day trip into the
Goan capital, Panjim, or a visit to the Anjuna market for example. Taxis can be
hired out for the day to take you to see some of the famous Goan sites. A local
company organizes mountain climbing, canyoning and hikes in the area for those
who like to be in touch with nature. Diving trips can also be arranged from
here, as well as day trips on a boat with lunch included or even sailing
courses. If you want to do a bit of exploring yourself take a bus or rickshaw
into the local town, Chawdi, and have a look at the market and shops; a great
local experience.
So whatever
you expect from your holiday in Palolem Beach, Goa, you will find things to do
that fit your requirements. Don’t forget the beach has plenty of great
restaurants and bars too!
